âYouâre late,â Danny said. âThe briefing is supposed to be at noonâon the dot.â
Nick pulled out a chair and sat down. âI never do anything âon the dot.ââ
âI do.â
âWell, there are medications for that.â He nodded a greeting to Kegan.
âItâs not like you to be late for work,â Kegan said. âYouâre usually the first one here.â
âI couldnât tear myself away from Endor,â Nick said. âThereâs so much to do.â
âI hear Victoria Braden is visiting there tomorrow.â
âYou should see the placeâcrepe paper everywhere. It looks like a Polish wedding.â
âIâm sure I donât need to mention this,â Danny said, âbut you will not be visiting with Mrs. Braden tomorrow. Correct?â
âIâve decided to break things off,â Nick said. âShe was getting too clingy.â
Kegan grinned. âYou wish.â
Nick turned to Danny. âAre we going to do this briefing, or are we going to keep discussing my attendance record? Iâve got things to do.â
Kegan held up a manila envelope. âWe got the first DNA reports back from the lab this morning.â
Nick reached for the envelope, but Kegan held it back.
âHave you reviewed the results yet?â Danny asked.
âYes, I have.â She glanced at Nick. âAll of them.â
âAnd?â
âThere are two sources of DNA in the body, Danny. You can get it from the nucleus of a cellâthatâs nuclear DNAâor you can get it from the mitochondria. Nuclear DNA degrades rapidlyâit would be almost impossible to get a good sample from bones this old, so we used mito-chondrial DNA from the teeth. Teeth are almost indestructibleâtheyâre the toughest biological evidence around. The only problem is that you canât tell as much from mitochondrial DNA.â
âWhy not?â Danny asked.
âBecause itâs passed directly from mother to childâit lacks the fatherâs DNA sequence. That means you canât use it to, say, test for paternityâ but since a mother and her children share identical mitochondrial DNA, you can at least use it to tell if two people have a common female ancestor.â
âAnd what did the tests show?â
âAre you ready for this? All four bodies are consanguineâthey have a common lineage.â
âAre we talking brothers or cousins or what?â
âThereâs no way to know,â Nick joined in. âAll it means is that they share a common female ancestor somewhere in the pastâa mother, or a grandmother, or even somebody who lived hundreds of years ago. Mitochondrial DNA doesnât changeâit mutates very slowly.â He looked at Kegan. âDid you say all four bodies?â
âThatâs right.â
âThen all four victims have a familial link. That could be huge.â
Danny looked at Nick. âI hate to have to ask this, butâwhy?â
âMotive, Dannyâsomebody knocked off four members of one extended family. It suggests some kind of family feud or somethingâ that could narrow the field of suspects quite a bit.â
Danny turned to Kegan again. âWhat else did the tests show?â
âTheyâre running the DNA profiles through CODISâthe Combined DNA Index Systemâto see if they get a match with any unsolved cases. No results yet.â
âWell, let me know if you hear anything. Is there anything else?â
She glanced at Nick, who shook his head almost imperceptibly. âThatâs all for now,â she said.
